We aim to develop the essential skills of literacy and mathematics, develop curiosity as well as critical and creative thinking through Inquiry Based and Developmental Play Based Learning, and teach and support social and emotional wellbeing.

Our teaching and learning programs, from Prep to Year 6, are underpinned by the Victorian Curriculum F to 10, and are planned and designed to meet the unique needs of each of our students.

Literacy

At Beaumaris Primary School, we have developed a comprehensive approach to literacy instruction.

Our dedicated teachers use evidence-based practices to teach reading, writing, speaking and listening. These include phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, comprehension, reading fluency, spelling, grammar and punctuation.

We use rich texts to model expert use of the English language, expose students to different perspectives and expand their understanding of the world. We empower students to become informed citizens, think critically and communicate effectively, as well as develop a love of reading and writing.

At Beaumaris Primary School, we are committed to fostering a lifelong love of learning through effective literacy instruction.

Numeracy

At Beaumaris Primary School we build a strong foundation in mathematics through a hands-on approach to explicit mathematics instruction that engages students and deepens their understanding of mathematical concepts.

Our teachers use evidence based practices to teach mathematics in a way that is interactive and meaningful. Through hands on activities, concrete materials and problem solving tasks, we empower our students to become confident mathematicians. Maths skills and knowledge are explicitly taught so that our students can efficiently and creatively apply their understanding and reasoning in a variety of situations.

At Beaumaris Primary School, we are committed to fostering a love of learning and a deep understanding of maths that will serve our students well in school and beyond.

Inquiry and Developmental Learning

Inquiry learning at Beaumaris Primary School is an approach to teaching the Victorian Curriculum which encourages our students to engage with, and explore, the world around them. Learning through Inquiry is multi-disciplinary and prioritises authentic problems that require critical and creative thinking to be explored in a deep and meaningful way. Students develop their ability to ask questions, design and investigate lines of inquiry, interpret evidence, form explanations and arguments, communicate findings and develop actions.

Developmental Learning provides students in our junior years with opportunities to expand and apply their understanding of concepts and practise learning how to learn. Teachers support this process by exploring student interests and building on their existing knowledge. Our teachers plan purposeful, intentional opportunities for our students to construct, create, explore and investigate new learning through creative and open-ended learning centres. In addition to consolidating academic understandings, this approach to learning facilitates the students’ social engagement and interactions with peers, and strongly supports a smooth transition from Kindergarten into Primary School.
